Part 1: Laying the Foundation with AI Agent Patterns
AI is evolving at breakneck speed, opening up possibilities for more intelligent, autonomous systems capable of handling everything from answering questions to making decisions based on complex data sets. But if we want to build systems that are both powerful and reliable, we need a solid architectural foundation.
In this post, I’ll introduce the core elements of AI agent design, focusing on the basic agent architectures, the role of Large Language Models (LLMs), and how knowledge bases can improve agent responses. Whether you’re just starting with AI agents or looking to understand how foundational patterns fit into larger systems, this is where it all begins.
This post is the first in a three-part series exploring how to master AI design patterns. We’ll start with the fundamentals: basic agent architectures, the role of Large Language Models (LLMs), and how knowledge bases improve agent responses. In Part 2, we’ll explore enhancing agents with tools and multi-agent environments, and in Part 3, we’ll dive into advanced knowledge management using graph-based patterns.

What is an AI Agent?
At its simplest, an AI agent is a system designed to interact with data, process requests, and respond intelligently to input from users or other systems. Think of it as a digital assistant with some level of “smarts.” But not all agents are created equal — some agents perform single, well-defined tasks, while others handle a wide array of functions and even operate independently without human input.
We can break these agents down into two broad categories:
- Basic Agents: These agents require direct input from a human or event and respond based on predefined parameters. They’re like the traditional chatbots that we’re all familiar with, but with some added intelligence.
- Autonomous Agents: These are more advanced, designed to work without constant human oversight. They can take actions based on goals, and some are even capable of improving their knowledge over time. While this category is still emerging, the progress in autonomous AI agents is rapidly accelerating.
For our purposes, we’ll start with basic agents. But keep in mind that the core principles here can also apply to autonomous agents as they grow in complexity and independence.
The Core Building Blocks: Large Language Models and Knowledge Bases
For an AI agent to be effective, it needs a “brain.” Today, that role is most often filled by Large Language Models (LLMs) like GPT-4, Claude, or LLaMA. These models are trained on massive amounts of data, allowing them to process language inputs and generate responses that feel natural and informed.
While LLMs are incredibly capable, they aren’t perfect. Out of the box, they can only respond based on what they’ve been trained on — meaning they can’t access private or proprietary information specific to a company or project. This is where knowledge bases come in.
What’s a Knowledge Base?
A knowledge base acts as a repository for all the information that the LLM doesn’t inherently know, like company-specific policies, customer data, or proprietary research. It’s essentially a specialized memory bank that the LLM can tap into to generate more accurate and contextually appropriate responses.
Let’s say we’re building an AI agent for a healthcare application. The LLM might be trained on general medical knowledge, but without access to a hospital’s internal knowledge base, it wouldn’t know patient histories, treatment protocols, or specific physician expertise. By connecting the agent to a knowledge base, we can give it the ability to handle questions specific to that healthcare environment.
Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG): Making Agents Smarter
One effective way to combine LLMs and knowledge bases is through a pattern called Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). This pattern allows the AI agent to query the knowledge base as part of its response generation process, providing more contextually relevant answers.
Here’s how it works:
- User Request: A user asks the agent a question — say, “What’s the latest protocol for treating heart disease?”
- Knowledge Base Retrieval: The agent first queries the knowledge base to pull up any relevant information. This could include recent research, treatment protocols, or internal guidelines that the LLM wouldn’t know otherwise.
- LLM Response Generation: Once the knowledge base provides relevant context, the LLM uses this information to generate a more accurate and context-rich response.
- Final Response: The agent sends the combined response back to the user, with the added knowledge from the database enhancing the answer’s relevance and accuracy.
RAG is especially useful when dealing with large, specialized data sets. Imagine you’re working in finance and need an agent that can access a firm’s financial models or historical market data — RAG enables the agent to pull in that extra layer of context that a regular LLM alone wouldn’t provide.
Practical Applications of Basic AI Agent Patterns
Let’s look at a few real-world scenarios where this basic AI agent pattern (LLM + knowledge base with RAG) can be applied effectively:
1. Customer Support Assistants
In customer service, agents need to access a wide range of information to answer inquiries accurately. By using a RAG setup, an agent can query a knowledge base for details on return policies, specific product info, or recent service updates. For example, if a customer asks, “What’s the warranty policy for the latest model?” the agent can pull the relevant warranty information from the knowledge base and include it in the response.
2. Healthcare Consultations
In a healthcare setting, a basic agent using RAG can pull in clinical guidelines, recent medical literature, and institutional policies to support physicians or answer patient questions. Imagine a scenario where a patient asks, “What should I expect during my recovery?” A RAG-enabled agent can provide personalized guidance by pulling information from the institution’s recovery protocol, making the response accurate and contextually appropriate.
3. Internal Company Tools
Within companies, these agents can serve as internal assistants, helping employees access HR policies, training resources, or project documentation. Say an employee asks, “How do I submit a travel expense report?” The agent can search the internal knowledge base and pull up the latest submission guidelines, making it a useful resource for day-to-day questions.
Building on This Foundation
The basic AI agent pattern — combining an LLM with a RAG-enabled knowledge base — is just the starting point. As AI agents become more advanced, we can start adding tools and even creating multi-agent environments where multiple agents collaborate to complete complex tasks. But before we get there, it’s essential to understand these foundational patterns and why they’re so effective in creating smarter, more context-aware AI systems.
